During the second world war the plymouth city centre was completely flattened by German bombers. Shortly after 1945 the city centre was completely redesigned and rebuilt.
The rebuilt city owes most of its grid of parallel streets to the architect 'Abercombie'. Few earlier buildings survived.

The shopping centre in Drake Circus (as opposed to the DrakeCircus™ shopping centre ) includes many popular bars and cafes.

Plymouth boasts two shopping malls.
The new Drake Circus shopping mall is a recent addition to the Devon shopping scene, although currently (spring 2007) it remains to be finished and it is not yet fully let.
The Armada Shopping Centre is the choice of the savvy shopper.
The centre hosts the unique home of the silverstall where you will find a stunning collection of silver jewellery as well as home to europe's largest amber.
Outside the boundaries of the Plymouth city centre you will find a plethora of other interesting local shops.
You will find a variety of intrusting places to eat however if you want the worlds largest burgers then Drake Circus (not the shopping mall) is the place to visit. (opposite the university of plymouth).
The Armada Shopping centre provides a variety of goods at perhaps the cheapest price anywhere in the UK.
